Hello everyone–happy weekend! Hope everyone’s week has been going well. My week has been sort of crazy to be honest. So many exams this week but that also meant less homework and more time to chill. I guess exams aren’t that bad, huh?
So here’s the deal:
I was browsing on Netflix one night, nothing out of the norm, and then I came across this new show. It’s called “100% Hotter”. This show is similar to TLC’s “What Not to Wear” but it takes place in the UK. However, there is a slight difference between these two shows.
“What Not to Wear” takes women from 20 to 60 years old who wear average day to day clothes, they just aren’t flattering, are out of style, or completely worn down. In contrast, “100% Hotter” takes a younger subject. These women are typically younger by ranging in age from 18-30. The more significant difference, though, is the “before stage” of each show.
In “100% Hotter”, the women come in wearing extravagant, excessive, and even absurd sorts of outfits. Now, I want to make it clear that this post is NOT judging these people’s sense of style, rather giving details on the “before” stage to understand the full effects of the “after” stage.
One person that stood out to me specifically was one who came in wearing an Alice in Wonderland costume, but with her own twist. She had some goth features and emphasized those by wearing dark makeup, multiple face piercings, and other accessories such as ripped tights, chokers, and gauge earrings.
The show starts by introducing the women to the modeling team. What I really like about this show is that it’s not called a makeover. Instead, it’s called a make under. I like this because it doesn’t give off the perception that women need to wear makeup or dress a certain way, but the old phrase “less is more” is really emphasized here. I think the main message from this show is these women don’t need to cover themselves up with costumes or makeup, etc. they need to embrace who they are and become comfortable in their own skin.
Step 1 in completing this goal is to complete their given challenge. Each person is given a different challenge according to what they are personally trying to overcome. For example, one of the women who went on this show was very self conscious about they length of her hair. She let it grow to a monstrous length, so her challenge entailed wearing a super long wig and letting strangers cut it.
Step 2 is meeting with the clothing team to show options of outfits that would look good on their specific body type, yet still incorporate their personal sense of style and charm to the outfit. It’s important to show people what will flatter them personally. This takes into consideration their body type, skin tone, height, etc. Yet, these new outfits don’t completely abolish their sense of style and the colors they feel comfortable wearing. This simply enhances them and their beauty that they already have.
Step 3 is hair/ makeup. Getting rid of the messy cut, extensions, and bleached hair and transforming it into a healthy, neat style can change the presence a person gives off so quickly. Just from evening out the hair and changing the color to make it look a little more natural (even if its totally not) can go such a long way.
The makeup portion is my favorite, however. I have gotten recently talented at doing makeup and learning about different brands, products, and colors that look good on each person and their skin tone or even facial features. It is so cool to see how the makeup artists can transform people from a totally crazy and extravagant full face of makeup into just enough to look like they are wearing makeup, but not going over the top.
The final step, step 4, is looking at the finished product–themselves! Most of the time these women can’t even recognize themselves in the mirror. It is such a mixed emotion process that overwhelms the viewer too. It is so rewarding to see the before/ after pictures and how amazing the women look. Not to say they weren’t beautiful before, but this is more of their natural beauty enhanced by little fixes such as hair, makeup, etc.
My favorite part about this show is seeing how happy the women are after viewing themselves all put together. It is so rewarding being able to watch people fall in love with themselves, especially if they haven’t ever before. This is why I love fashion and makeup. It makes everyone feel like the best version of themselves. (Or if you feel better without makeup, props to you because thats amazing). Overall, it is so rewarding helping other people, even if it’s in the slightest way. For me, using my knowledge about fashion and beauty and using it to help others is so great and so much fun.
10/10 recommend this show on Netflix. Comment below your thoughts!
Until next time. Xo,
